Leather Man Ltd. is a family-run business founded and continuously run in Essex, Connecticut since 1967. They originally opened a factory for the sole purpose of producing their original Trace Carrier belt, which you can still buy today.
The company is named for a grand figure in Connecticut folklore, the Connecticut Leather Man. Said to have arrived from France in 1862, the strange man dressed in crudely stitched leather from head to toe and only spoke with grunts and gestures. The heavy, raw leather suit was a coat of armor the vagrant depended on to protect him against the sometimes harsh New England elements. "Leather Man," as he was dubbed by those who encountered him, slept outdoors year-round, mostly in caves around rural Connecticut and New York.
For nearly 30 years he continuously walked the same 360-mile loop through Connecticut and parts of New York, and he would arrive in exactly the same location, at exactly the same time, every 34 days.
