Limited Edition Beach Canvas Bag, Natural & Navy
The unique design of this canvas and leather tote bag was inspired by an old Navy mail bag. A few years ago Shige Fumihira, Descendancy Products' founder, came across a large canvas duffle bag covered with a grid of brass grommets and stamped with the words "TO BE RETURNED (MAILS) ADMIRALTY". This mysterious item turned out to be a Navy mail bag that was designed to sink to the bottom of the ocean. If a boat was destroyed in battle, the Navy did not want their mail bags to float on the surface of the ocean because they could easily be retrieved by the enemy, along with any sensitive information contained within.
Descendancy's "Beach Bag" replicates the grid of aged brass grommets on that old mail bag perfectly. The font and letter size of the stamped text is an exact match for the original, but Shige has altered the text to read "TO BE RETURNED 6-7(SWELL) LOCAL COAST" as a coded nod to his passion for surfing.
This version of the "Beach Bag" was produced in extremely limited quantities. Vintage deadstock webbing is used for the straps.
