VISIT US IN REAL LIFE: HICKOREE'S FLOOR TWO

In 1962, Whirlpool Corporation won NASA's contract to design food and waste systems for Project Gemini, the second human spaceflight mission in America. Over ten flights, Gemini developed techniques for extended space travel, later to be implemented in the Apollo missions to the moon.

It was for these missions that Whirlpool developed Astronaut Ice Cream, freeze-dried slices of Neapolitan-flavored ice cream (that's chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry). There is some disagreement as to whether or not the astronauts actually eat this stuff in outer space (it was strangely unpopular among astronauts in the '60s, and by the '70s the Skylab space station was advanced enough to have a refrigerator, which held "real" ice cream) . . . but one thing is indisputable: it's delicious.
