In the early 1930s, Charles Howard began making violet-flavored mints in
an industrial loft in downtown Manhattan. He called the candy "Chowards
Violet" and began to sell it on street corners in his neighborhood. As his
business became more successful, he expanded the product line to include violet chewing gum and other flavors of mints.
After C. Howard's death, the company was passed to a long-time employee; it remains a family owned business, now operating from Bellport, Long Island, NY.
