Sunflower "Mammoth" Heirloom Seeds
HISTORY: A native to America, sunflowers were grown for the nutritious seeds they produce. The botanical name comes from the Greek god of the sun, Helios, because each flower turns to the sun throughout the day.
HABIT: A giant in the garden that can top 12 feet tall. Sturdy stems bear one large yellow flower at the top which can measure 12-15 inches wide. Side stems continue to produce many smaller blooms once the top flower fades. Each plant produces hundreds of high quality striped seeds for you or the birds.
CULTURE: Sunflowers are fast growing plants. Sow seed directly outdoors in full sun to light shade after last spring frost. Cover seeds with 1/4 inch of fine soil. Thin to 24 inches apart and stand back. Towering plants may need support in windy locations.
