Tsuchiwa Gama Medium Mug, "Gohonte" Spots
The Tsuchiwa kiln was established in 1976 by Nobuo Tomehara in the city of Hagi in the Yamaguchi prefecture in Japan. Tsuchiwa Gama is known for producing "hagi-yaki", a traditional style of pottery dating back to the early 17th century.
"Hagi-yaki" is characterized by "kan-nyu", or cracking, which naturally occurs due to a difference in shrinkage between the glaze and the clay after pieces are removed from the kiln. The "kan-nyu" effect becomes more evident as the pieces are used and small traces of tea or sake seep into the cracks in the glaze, an aging process known as "shichi bake".
