"America The Beautiful" Woodcut Print
This is a multi-color woodcut print made by layering five hand-drawn, hand-carved woodblocks. The image was conceived after Tugboat Printshop (Pittsburgh, PA) was invited to participate in a Washington, DC art exhibition commemorating the inauguration of our 44th President. Artists Paul Roden and Valerie Lueth describe "America The Beautiful" as follows:
"We chose to make a topographical image of the country in an effort to represent all of America as a unified land, omitting state boundaries but focusing on cities, monuments, and general regional characteristics. In a sense, our 'America' reads as a simultaneous narrative -- tucked into the complex patterning of the landscape are subtle references to our history and growth as an adaptable, pioneering country and people."
#44 of this editioned print now hangs in the Executive Office Building at 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC.
